December 2017 was an exciting month for us with (1) the launch of our first project and (2) the opening of our permanent home in Kennedy Town, but more on this second part later. Over 1000 Hong Konger's showed their interest in standing desks and voted for their favorite from our five semi-finalists. We even caught the eyes and ears of the SCMP!
"Our goal with this campaign is to support the design expertise in Hong Kong to develop a standing desk to meet the needs of Hong Kong," says Cris O'Brien, co-founder of the Keep Moving Project. The first goal of the project is to develop a standing desk for Hong Kong that will be a stand-alone product in it's own rite, but also support our mission of providing healthy desk options to those who cannot afford them. SoCO, an organization aimed to help those in sub-divided flats live dignified lives, will be among the first of the beneficiaries of the "buy one, give one" program, alongside the Christian Zheng Sheng College, founded by Chan Siu Cheuk (Alman Chan) with the aim to correct problematic students with drug addiction and other problems using life education.
All of the participants have shown dedication to the cause and we cannot thank them enough for taking the time to participate. We know that they will all embrace the standing culture and keep moving. In our last post, we announced our winners for the best kid-friendly design and the best student-designed prize. Today, we are excited to announce the winners for (1) public vote and (2) the grad prize. The grand prize winner will have our full support in further developing and producing their desk.
Today, we are excited to announce the GRAND PRIZE winner to be... Utt & Michael - HKU Space Students
Taking advantage of geometric benefit of the hexagon, this desk works similar to the collapsable cup. It is adjustable to essentially anyone in the house or school, can be combined together with other desks to make a larger working area, and can be customizable to meet the needs of almost any age.
The winner of public's favorite is someone familiar to the scene...
Potter - HKDI Student
We have all seen the treadmill desk, but we have not seen a treadmill desk that uses the treadmill itself as the base for the desk. The treadmill is also self-operated, meaning there is no electric component and can be used as a foot rest when desired. The desk top itself takes advantage of a historical design, adapted to meet the demands of the modern world.
We are so impressed with all of the semi-finalists that we are actively looking for potential partners to help support the production of them all. All semi-finalists will receive 1 free month at CrossFit Asphodel, one of our fitness partners (and neighbors). Additionally, for anyone who is interested in producing their designs, we are more than happy to help find retail channels for you. If you are interested in helping to sponsor a desk, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
